Spacing Between the Supports in Piping

08/12/2010 5:57 AM

Is there any standard that describes the spacing between the supports in piping?

Yes - probably - and if you tell us what you are supporting we might even be able to say which one.

yes, however you must determine as to what are actually supporting, for instance if it's a line shaft you must determine or establish critical points on your system, like bending moments, stress locations, the amount of load are supporting, type of forces acting on that particular system.is it cantilever or simple supported system, these are imperical guide lines to finding your supports spacing.

intelectuals solves problems,genuises prevent them.

Yes there is....

The ASME B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes contain a table of suggested spans for both liquid filled and gas/vapor filled piping systems.

Some things you should note:

- the spans do NOT apply where detailed calculations are made ( read: detailed computer piping stress analysis)

- the spans do NOT apply to piping which is thinner than Schedule 40/STD or when filled with liquids with a SG>1.0

- the span table assumes that concentrated loads ( valves, risers etc.) are supported independently.

Please describe your piping system, temperature, pressure and fluids contained...

My Minnesota Mechanical Code which is based on the ICC Codes from which I quote in part:

Piping Material Max. Horiz. (feet) Max. Vert. (feet)
ABS pipe 4 10
Cast-Iron pipe 5 10
Copper or copper-alloy tubing 1 ¼" dia. or smaller 6 10
Copper or copper-alloy tubing 1 ¼" dia. Larger 10 10
CPVC pipe or tubing, 1" and smaller 4 10
PEX tubing 2 2/3" 10
Steel tubing 8 10

There are materials shown, the library near you may have the complete table. Or, you can buy them, and show your support for the Code writing industry!

ICC references MSS SP-69-96 and MSS SP 58 (Manufactures Standardizations Society of the Valve and Fittings Industry, Inc.)

The International Fuel Gas Code does not like piping supported by connected equipment or other piping.

Supports, hangers, and anchors must be designed not to interfere with the free expansion of contraction of the piping.

Other than that, you need to be more specific

Yes, and it is always bigger than the outside diameter of the piping.
