I like this one if you can get your boss to give up the bucks. The classroom time they offer is helpful too.

If by 2D design you mean an electronic circuit, Microcap10 might be of interest. Go to YouTube and search Frank1H2P for information on where to find and how to use a free, unlimited time circuit evaluation program. If it suits your needs, you may want to purchase the more complete version.
