Non Destructive Testing - Rolling Friction Evaluation

08/13/2010 3:47 PM

hi , I want to know how can we perform the non destructive testing technique to establish the coefficient of friction in the cold rolling process . Is there any technique available in the world today ?

I measured it just the other day when is was making foil out of wire.

I'll look it up. I think it's 3, or maybe 12.

I'll call you with the number.

I'd start by giving more facts such as what is the material being rolled, what is the 'rolling reduction,' what is the roll material and surface texture, what might be your inprocess coolant? Milo

Hi,

in grinding (cylindrical wheel surface grinder) we measured torque and radial load.

From torque you can derive tangential force.

Tangential force divided by radial load is coefficient of friction - very useful for diagnostics.

In grinding and rolling this is not pure "friction" but a complicated function of many parameters - nevertheless very useful for process diagnostics.
