DP TRANSMITTER ABOVE TAPS

08/13/2010 7:14 PM

HAD A QUESTION ABOUT A DP METER ON A COMPRESSOR OIL COOLING SKID MANUFACTURED BY MOTION INDUSTRIES. THE OIL TANK ALONG WITH A SEPARATE PRESSURE AND TEMP TRANSMITTER HAS THE DP METER MOUNTED ABOUT 6" ABOVE THE HOLDING TANK FOR LEVEL MEASUREMENT. HIGH SIDE TAPED IN 1" FROM BOTTOM AND LOW ON TOP OF TANK. TANK IS EXACTLY 12" HIGH. CAN THIS WORK IF SO HOW. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOU HELP.

How close is the diagram to what you've got?

Is either connection to a remote seal connected with a capillary tube, or are the connections standard pipe/tubing?

it is either cappilary or the tubing. but the subject is how do you calculate.

Why it will not work? It will show level after 1" hight.

IT IS MOUNTED 6 INCHES ABOVE THE TANK WITH STANDARD TUBING 3/8.

Guest, please turn off your the CAPS LOCK key and type is lower case. It is difficult to read all caps.

Is diagram #2, below, an accurate diagram of "mounted 6 inches above the tank"?

Dear Guest,

Draw a diagram this is not possible to measure level like this by simple DP TX.

Guest,

Are you sure that this is holding tank or is there a posibility to be a oil filter with a delta pressure measurement?

Regards
JP

Friend,

Are you sure one hundred percent that this is a oil holding tank or is there some posibility that this is a oil filter?

My thoughs exactly. The tank is so small. It is more likely to be a filter dp meter.

Read the rules: turn off the caps key.

@Guest

A little friendly advice. When you are talking in forums using all caps is considered yelling and generally thought of as rude. I am making the assumption you didn't know that since you did your entire question in CAPS.

You will tend to get a better response if you use normal mixed case text. Good luck with your question and I wish you the best.

Contact Motion Industries directly.

Thanks to all of the responses. Apologies for the ALL CAPS. I rarely post on sites therefore my forum etiquette is lacking.

Yes Carl E your drawing is correct.

Thought i would ask the question here since this was a layout i have never seen unless it was a bubbler type application. No manuals/documents for this skid exist it is a small part of a massive project going on for two years.

Manufacturer was next step. Thanks again all.

Welcome to CR4.

If plumbed with standard piping/tubing, as indicated, a DP transmitter so mounted cannot 'see' the head pressure, therefore, it cannot measure level.

If the high side leg were a filled capillary on a remote seal, the level could be measured. The LRV and URV settings would not start at zero; the LRV would start at some negative value and reflect the specific gravity the fill fluid. And the LRV and URV would reflect the specific gravities of the oil medium. But that doesn't appear to be the case.

As others have pointed out, such plumbing could easily reflect an installation designed to indicate pressure drop across a filter.

Does the plumbing and transmitter installation appear to be 'original' or replacement (degree of dirt, paint and corrosion consistent with other components)?

Sometimes replacement stuff isn't installed properly, never does work properly and is ignored until someone comes along to try and figure it all out. Best of luck figuring this one out.

Whether it is capillary with seal flange or direct mounted with seal flange or tubing is of no consequence (based on the question as to whether or not it will work), the installation will measure the liquid level once the level is greater than one inch from the bottom (if the diagram in the second post is applicable), there will be some small degree of inaccuracy due to the fact that there will be vapor trapped and compressed in the high side tubing as the tank fills, if the transmitter was mounted below the high side tap then the vapor would be able to excape.

DP is probably delta pressure. That would be differential pressure of the two points. I do not believe it is oil level. I could be wrong, but from my experiences that is purpose of DP meter.

Probably you can see the porpuse for this intrument in the P&ID or also knowing the tag for the transmitter, If the tag is PDT, definitely We are talking of a differential pressure transmitter used to measure the oil filter blockage in order to change it.
