Artificial Salt Lake

08/15/2010 3:02 AM

Oil rich Middle East countries are virtually a dry desert landscape.

Water for human consumption is obtained by purifying sea water in large quantities. Pumping stations are there to transfer this water to the consumers at considerable distances.

Why it cannot be practiced that the sea water should be pumped to create artificial salt lakes in the desert.

Over the period, natural filtering properties of soil can provide water fit for human consumption, marine life will be a bonus and to my thinking such arrangement will be more environment friendly.

So instead of pumping desalinated water long distances, you are suggesting pumping sea water long distances to fill a lake which will be porous and the water will drain away to the level of the water table.
With thinking like that you should be able to get a job in the banking sector.
I'm out.

Seawater cannot be desalinated by mere filtration processes through soil. It has to be done by evaporation or by Reverse Osmosis.

As the water evaporates, it will have to be replaced with more salt water. The salt content in the lake will continue to elevate until you will be able to walk on it. Or mine it.
