Lack of Modern Day Worksongs

08/16/2010 2:08 PM

I've recently heard some old sea shanties, and decided we should have more modern workday songs.
Shoals of Herring is an old fishing song which I've penned new words to (with opologies to the brave seafarers).
I give you a firmware engineers lament 'Lines of Coding', to be sung with a nasal twang.

T'was on a fine and a pleasant day,
In a cubicle that I was sharing,
As a junior in a team of designers,
I was doing enless lines of coding.

Oh the work was hard, and the hours were long,
The deadlines filled with much foreboding.
We drank endless coffe, ate endless donuts,
When we did those endless lines of coding.

Now I'm at a meeting, I'm a senior man,
I can swear and bear the MD's goading,
Got a company car like the other fellows,
I'm still doing endless lines of coding.

Nice "shoals of coding" there. There's nothing like a good worksong.

I nearly always have some music on when I'm working - good tunes for hammering are the ones I usually go for and don't care about the lyrics (if any) when I sing along. I often sing foreign stuff (meaning unknown!) or instrumental parts, as long as the rhythm and the range suits me.

It's the sort of thing you only get away with as your own boss, singing along at top volume while you work.

I guess the proper work song is the one sung a capella though. Sadly my own parodies of classic tunes (at least the ones I can remember singing recently) are not on topic for the work.

Cheers<
I've just discovered the joy of having the car radio out of action, I'd removed the battery to do some work and couldn't be bothered to enter the security code.
Bliss! I can sing if I want or have quiet, I'm recalling all those songs I used to sing to the kids when they were little and those I'd sing driving up to London on my scooter when I was courting Mrs Cat (anyone for 'Six days on the Road' ?)

Just realised the first verse of my parody doesn't scan so here's an extra one.

Oh the chips were wrong and the etching bad,
And the boards they all still needed loading,
We did some mods and fixed the hardware,
but it still took endless lines of coding.

Can't get the radio back on? You're not one of those people who has gadgets smarter than you, are you? I have a lady friend with a BMW Z-4. She doesn't know how to set the car's clock which is built into the radio. So, the time is correct half the year til it changes to Daylight Savings time, then it's an hour off. My old '84 Benz has a knob which I twist to set the correct time. I'm smarter than MY car's clock! (But sometimes not much.)

If your wearing a smoking jacket at the time, then Yes it is classical.

Like to sing loudly songs from old musicals:

Sound of Music

Wizard of Oz

Les Miserables

and so on

Del-

Perhaps I am being a bit nit-picky here, but your little ditty seems to fit more in the class of "Working Blues" rather than real work songs. I do not mean to belittle your efforts in any way, but I can not see writing code as the sort of thing that lends itself to developing a real work song. Sea shanties and other true "work" songs were developed to set a rhythm such that teams could maximize their efficacy- i.e., hauling on an anchor rode. One generally does not code in rhythm with other coders. Good typing, on the other hand, requires the development of a rhythm, but I can not think of a good example of codifying this sort of rhythm, which may be because we all type to our own rhythms (unless, of course, one is working in the "typing pool" where everyone is using an old mechanical typewriter). Now, for coding, how does one assign a rhythm to something like this?

"#include...." OK, which library was that?....hmmm. Time for a cup of coffee....

Never mind the library right now- we can worry about that later.

"if a=c..." What was it I was going to do with this test? I lost track of the flow while worrying about which library to use...OK, time for another cup of coffee...

etc...

Indeed, I entirely agree.
The songs were to ensure the rhythm of the work be it hauling a net or mowing a field.
My post was just a flimsy cover for some light hearted humour and for us to hark back to our working roots.
<Saunters off singing>
The keeper did a hunting go,
Under his arm he carried a bow,
All for to shoot at the merry little doe
Among the leaves so green-o.

Krissy boy,
Master,
sing ye well?
Very well.
Hey down,
Ho down,
Derry derry down,
Among the leaves so green-o

....oooph ! If I wasn't busy doing nothing in Scotland I'd try for a witty reply. Apart from failing miserably, I've luckily discovered the 'Roud Folk Song Index' (12853) to divert myself with. Time for another beer and a hey nonny noo
