Motor Winding Heater Kit

08/18/2010 1:22 PM

Hi friends...... We face low megger value of motor insulation during monsoon, which craetes a problem. We need to purge the TB or If Intermediate junction box & all. Can anybody suggest better & easier idea? Is there any availability of motor winding heater kit in the market. I reside in India. Thank you for your comments..

In generators, we use flexible rubber strip heaters that are quite simple and easy to install- if you have the room inside the motor housing. There are a number of these offered on the market. Very effective at keeping the windings dry in high humidity conditions, and easy to install and power.

Some VFD have the ability to send a small DC current through the winding to keep it warm....

Dear Mr. Giri,

If you have baking oven in your workshop, motor may be dismantled and put it inside oven with thrmostat setting correctly(depending on insulation class of motor) and heating for several hours depending on moisture contains in winding.Alternatively if you have low voltage DC source with voltage control facility having high amp. capacity, after dismantling of rotor, connect the DC supply across the windings/coils and increase the DC voltage slowly so that amp. reading is within the FLA of the motor and run it for sometime ( at the sametime pl. take temperature readings of windings and it will not cross the designated insulation class of the motor). As a second alternative, you may also use hotblower for winding heating but tihs may not be much effective method depending on volume/ size of the winding.

Using a forced air heat source could potentially damage the windings by forcing foreign objects (i.e., dust particles, etc.) into the windings and insulation coatings. It is generally not a good idea for general maintenance. Accumulation of such airborne contaminants can compound the problem because they are often hygroscopic, resulting in higher accumulation of moisture in the windings.

Thanks Jraef........what I wanted is a simple voltage source that can be used in any feeder on demand. The one mentioned is actually a permanent one, which keeps the motor healthy in standstill.Let me check or crate one like battery operated one of 24V range. What you say?
