GI Strip for Earthing??

08/18/2010 2:46 PM

Hi, I have to replace copper conductor used for lightning rod earthing by GI STRIP, I want to know, what is the Equivalent GI strip dimension for a 95mm2 copper conductor earthing?? Some people advice me 50X6mm GI...but could you please give me a solution for this? Is their any conversion table between Copper and GI??

Generally, I don't think there is any conversion tables between Copper and GI. GI is a Galvanise Iron where the iron have different chemical composition. There can be low carbon with high silicon or low carbon with low silicon and there is many grad of iron in the market. Each of the iron grad have different conductivity for the current passing thru it.

In china GI strips is very common used for earthing but there is only one problem. When the GI is grounded in to the soil the tendency is that, these GI plate will get corroded over the years and you will have a very bad earthing for your electrical services or for your lightning rod.

S = I x Root 't' / K

Where,

I is the maximum earth fault current anticipated, in amperes

't' is the fault clearing time or the fault duration, in seconds

K is a constant (for GI it is 80 for 1 sec. fault duration and 46 for 3 seconds duration)

S = Cross section of the earthing conductor, in sq.mm

Hope now you can calculate th GI Strip size required
