Machinery Voltage Compatibility Problem

08/19/2010 6:18 AM

Good day! this coming october we are expecting the delivery of our machinery. the problem is that machinery requires 400 volts and our generator has 440 volts output. will the machinery runs with this setup? Thank you!

You'd be best to confirm it with the machinery supplier, but 440V is only 10% over the 400V, so it will probably be OK.

[Note: While it's true that there are many highly qualified and experienced engineers on this site (who would shoot me down in flames if I was far off the mark ) - as a general rule, you shouldn't trust what you are told on the internet. Whenever possible, get the information from a "real person" - in this case, your supplier or the machinery manufacturer].

I agree with JohnDG, check with your machinery supplier first and foremost. Here are a couple of things to consider. Most drives will fault out on a 10% voltage difference. In this case you might get an overvoltage fault. If the machine does run you will be right on the edge and nuisance overvoltage faults could occur on a slight mains fluctuation. Secondly many CNCs come with a Step up transformer built into them and they usually have taps that allow for different voltage inputs. Check to see if your is one of these models. If it is, you may only have to drop a tap setting on the transformer.

Good Luck

You may want to verify frequency

I agree, start with comparing the frequencies of the two systems, it makes a big difference. If they are both the same, a simple transformer will suffice. f they are not, it gets significantly more complex.

OK Thanks to all! the frequency is the same 50Hz.

If the generator is feeding only these 400-volt loads, you might be able to adjust the voltage regulation accordingly. This may entail derating the generator capacity by a factor of 400/440.
