It would be helpful if you could clarify your question a little and demonstrate a little more thought in your request. Here are a few questions you could answer that may prompt some useful answers from this community:

• Is this project for you personally to attempt or for a group of students to perform?
• What level of a project are you attempting? Grade school, undergraduate senior or junior project, master degree project, doctoral dissertation, hobby demonstration, etc.
• What field of mechanical engineering? Automotive, vacuum, structural, theoretical, aeronautic, extra-terrestrial, bio-mechanics, etc.

I think you'll find that if you show some real initiative and thought here you will get some very useful help from us. But blatant laziness will be ignored or worse.

Assuming that you are obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, you may not be allowed to do a project completely of your choosing. In the Bachelor's degree program I obtained in EE the senior project was a full year program for most students. The first semester was the students finding out what documentation would be required to submit a project's results for grading. Also during the first semester the students would get a list of projects that each advising professor wished to have done during the second semester. These projects would be sized to the number of students allowed on each project. The projects would also be of a scale and complexity that a properly disciplined team of students will likely be able to complete the project by the end of the semester with a limited time and finance budget.

This does not mean that a group of students cannot do their own proposal, but this will be the more difficult path for a team to take. This is because you will have to hurdle two presentations of your project. The obvious presentation will be the one at the end of the project that you will have all of your data and analysis about how well the project went over the semester. The more difficult presentation will be your first presentation as you try to get an adviser. You will have to prove to your prospective adviser that you and your team grasp all of the engineering difficulties you will encounter to build your dream in the allotted time and budget. Likely, none of your fellow undergraduates will have ever faced the complexities that unexpectedly happen in turning an idea into reality. So this can be a much higher burden than you think. You will have to convince this professor that you can do this with little to no guidance from them. If they think at all during this initial office presentation that you will need any of their expertise for you to succeed they can refuse your proposal. This is not to say that a pitfall that nobody anticipated won't get an advisor's insight, just that a naive proposal will be refused.
