Networking Issues

08/23/2010 10:43 AM

Hello there. I am faced with a task.

There are two offices in two separate buildings on either side of a road. Each building has a server. A wired LAN cable passing over the road links the two offices. Both offices use the same internet connection.

There is need to connect both offices without using a wire/cable (physical) connection between the two. This is for both offices to use the same server (i.e. only one) and also the same internet connection.

I am thinking Wireless, but how will the exact architecture be and what will the speed/range limitations be?

Thanks

As far as wireless, it is hard to say without knowing the distance (feet/meters) between the buildings to ascertain the type of wireless system to use or how many computers will be in use on the server from the other building.

Is this an A) Office, B) Industrial, C) Residential environment?

Just off the top of my head without the benefit of further details, would it not be easier and less complicated to install (subscribe) to a second internet connection at the other building and set up the (existing) lone server to be accessed via the internet by the computers from the other building?

Hi there. Thanks for the reply. I reckon 30 metres of road to be traversed and 30 PCs in each building on either side. The area is an office environment with avergae vehicular traffic.Well the intention was to have ONE internet connection for both. That is the main objective!

That is the main objective!
Yeah, but why? It sounds rather arbitary. Like saying lets make all the PCs pink .
If all else fails change the objective.

Hi,

health warning: These posts do contain traces of nut!!!

Well, as you see, it was necessary to limit to ONE internet connection. Hence the requirement; in addition to others! Surely it is not so difficult I have to change the objective.

No, sorry I still don't 'see' you have merely made a statement, not an explanation.

I'm with Del. Surely the cost of the microwave system is more than the cost of two internet connections! Were does the necessity come from? Arbitraryland?

No problem, but the "client" gives these requirements!

You also must remember that current wireless technology is NOT secure. If you are sending information between the two that may be considered private, anyone with a little electronics knowledge will be able to tap into your system and record all transactions between the systems.

Have seen ordinary police radio scanners modified by a high school student to pick up both bluetooth and cellular signals with perfect clarity.

We use a secure point-to-point full duplex microwave system that works just fine.

This link gives you an idea of the technology involved and might be a good starting point.

Hi. Thanks. The main objective is to share one internet connection and to have a wireless connection between both buuildings. Average traffic, approximately that from 30 PCs in each building on either side of the road.

Hello Matthew,

Can you tell us why they are going away from just changing the wired connection to a fiber optic connection?

Hello, Thanks for the concern, but this task was put to be solved. Let the two buildings communicate wirelessly across the road (it can be wired within each building), let the two buildings then share one internet connection and one server. I simply have to provide a solution along these recommendtions, but not to change it; so fibre is not really possible!
