Nickel chrome or Hard chrome

Please explain which one is better

Nickel chrome

or

Hard chrome.

hard chrome is hard. so it is good for bearing surfaces that experience a lot of wear. 70 HRC is not uncommon. It is often ground to finish and looks black after grinding. very slick. you won't be able to grab it with a pipe wrench for example. lots of Hexavalent Chrome in the waste stream, very very toxic.

Decorative chrome is just that, decorative. It may peel off if used for bearing surfaces. Generally poor adhesion. pinholes are common. Tends to be rather slick too. Hex Chrome is also a problem.

Nickel (not nickel chrome, that is a misnomer) is primarily decorative. generally somewhat better adhesion to steel, but tends to form pinholes if not done right. not as hard or slick, not as "bright" as chrome more of a dull yellowish silver than a "white" mirror finish. cheaper than chrome, not as corrosion resistant. Some people develop a contact allergy to Nickel. Not as much toxic waste generated.
