Smoke point for smoker

08/25/2010 3:11 PM

I need to figure out at what temperature wood will start to smoke using a small smoker tube. What is the formula I should use? Thanks.

It will depend on the availability of oxygen.

What formula? How about some experimentation?

What kind of wood? How much moisture? Doesn't anybody search?

Oh, hell what's the use?

Ignition and Charring Temperatures of Wood

Why do you think that there is a formula? There are much to many variables here, moisture content and species of wood, oxidizer availability, surface area.

The moisture content of the wood is 5%. It is a small brushed steel smoker tube about 12" long and 4" in diameter with oblong holes in the top. The wood is hardwood chips and they will have been soaked for approximately 1/2 hour in water; wine or beer.

And for the record, I did search. I don't really think there's any reason to be rude because I asked a question.

It's not because you asked a question, it's because you asked a question and provided no supporting information. We can't read your mind.

Did you read the link I provided?

I see this as an opportunity to demonstrate the LynDoor® Industries CR4 Thread Information Gap Filler LL2000. This device, when asked a 'Yes/No' question, will provide the correct answer every time.

Or, perhaps the original poster can provide more information, thus such a device is no longer necessary. But, you should order one anyway; you know there will be another thread where it can be used.

I asked it the same question about the OP three times and got the same answer each time. Yes. I bet you can guess what the question was.

That's a great tool!

Thanks for nothing. Must make note: American Engineers are assholes.

Only when asked questions that are easily answered with a simple GOOGLE search.

That's an interesting perspective. We are the ones at fault because we won't do your work for free on a public website. Have a good life. Remember nothing is ever your fault when you're just incompetent.

We can be, especially to arrogant jerks that want us to do their work for free.

So. You don't wish to buy a CR4 Thread Information Gap Filler LL2000?

That hurts!

Let's stop trading insults!

Perhaps there is no "formula". This is an opportunity for you to do some real engineering by developing a formula on your own, based on your own experimental observations. Identify what you think are the important variables and conduct tests controlling each variable. This is called the "Scientific Method" and is the way that the greatest discoveries in science and engineering were made. Who knows, maybe you will win the Nobel prize for your investigations.

An additional note: any investigation involving beer is worthy of pursuit.
