Cannot Get Replies

08/26/2010 7:53 PM

There are 35 replies (on my screen--probably more to come), but I cannot get them. The CR4 heading comes on, but after a while the message that Internet Explorer cannot display the web page. Have tried several of the replies with the same result. Since this is a question I asked, it would be nice to get the replies! Can anyone help?

Thanks.

That was the smallest character I could find. You can't send an empty message field with no characters. It was an attempt at humor.

If it is the problem where you open a CR4 thread (such as the one you just started) and the page partially loads, then goes blank, then comes up again, then goes blank then crashes, then yes I have the same problem (and it is intermittent too).

For me it started a few months ago (I blame our IT department or Windows automatic update) and I think it has something to do with Internet Explorer 7 (I am running Version 7.0.5730.13). Sometimes reloading the page fixes the problem, other times I just load the page up using an alternate internet browser (such as Google Chrome).

Try reloading the page, restarting Internet Explorer or try an alternate browser.

Which CR4 thread was it by the way?

Similar, but not the same. Only the CR4 heading loads; the text of the Q&A does not. After the heading, nothing happens for quite a while (dial-up!) until the "Can't Display" message comes on. Most things load OK, but a few intermittent ones don't. Have tried refresh and restart, but not an alternate browser. I use IE7, but don't know the version.

Great now the problems I mentioned happening to me on other CR4 threads are now happening to me on this thread when using IE7!

I think it may be the same problem (a loading timeout error), with your dial-up I think it just happens slower than those of us with the same problem who are using broadband.

If the problem keeps occurring try accessing the CR4 thread from a different direction (like through your subscribed discussions menu, bottom right hand corner of the CR4 screen, as this sometimes helps). Alternatively try a different browser

Better, free and a small download size.

Lehman57,

My last reply should NOT have been off topic. I thought that it was highly relevant to your situation.

Further thoughts, the version of IE that you are running: GO to Help on the browser; click and go to About Internet Explorer, click again and your IE version will appear in a small window. This works for most Microsoft Software and much non Microosft software as well.

Another way to determine Software Versions is to keep a copy of Belarc on your Desktop, keep it up to date and run it when you need an answer to a question like that . Try it - it is excellent.

Thanks for your helpful (and ON TOPIC) comments. The problem self-solved, but I have no idea why! But I'm sure it will be back. Actually it has been back--happened to another CR4 thread; that also self-solved. So far this happens only with CR4.

It is not that I turned the computer off, because I had done that and do it every night. It might have been that I went to Yahoo to get my mail from my normal server; however, it has to be mail that I have not downloaded before. (My normal server is not web based.) If I forward something that I received here, it will not work on Yahoo either; but a "fresh" one will.

I have Belarc Adviser; have printed its findings but haven't had to dig thru all the info yet.

Re: Cannot Get Replies

Just tried the alternate browser--didn't work. The items I have already opened on my normal browser (not web based) is then off the server and cannot be opened by Yahoo which is my alternate. So, forwarded one to it and got the same "IE cannot display." Tried viewing all threads from a couple of different places; it shows up just fine, I can open the ones on each side of it, but it will not open and gives the same "can't display" message. Tried opening from an individual account (Rorschach I think), and got the same. Other things have opened OK. Had a couple flashes of the opened thread, but it went away in less than one second; then same message.

I wish I could tell you what to do. My relationship with computers switches between love/hate and hate/love. Engineers don't like things that don't work......consistantly.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention hate/hate. Whether it's software or a car, if it doesn't freaking work, don't sell it to me. Call me when it does. WTF...over. A$$HOLES

If an engineer designed a jet engine and planes kept crashing all over the place and he/they kept sending out patches that may or may not fix the problem, how fuqing long would that scenario last. Not very!

I'm using IE8 with no problem. I presume that you actually have an intermittent problem. Otherwise how could you possibly read this reply.

This computer is using Murphy's Law on me! The thread that I asked about (Electricity in or on the wire) decided to work today--don't know why. But had to look at this thread on Yahoo, because it wouldn't work on IE7 and the local ISP.

Oops, I see Mr. whiskey had a little rant while I wasn't looking. sorry.

I'm fed up with IE. I downloaded a free browser called "slimbrowser" from cnet.com, it integrates with IE nicely. I've been using it for about two weeks now and it seems fine.

Well,

Your drunken rant rings so true. Why can't Bill Gates et al. sell working software instead of putting out overpriced crap that then has to be debugged by the consumer.

It's like getting a car with 15 parts missing. And you don't even know which 15 have been ommitted.

Because we keep buying the crap.

With each new version they come out with, they promise that everything is fixed and being the collective suckers that we are, we line up to purchase yet another piece of crap, over and over and over....................

For those of us that hesitate to buy the new piece of crap, they will render our old piece of crap useless, resistance is futile..........What a racket.

Switch fron Internet Explorer to Firefox. Chrome works also, but apparently the CR4 tool bar doesn't work with Chrome. If you don't use the tool bar, Chrome might be better for dial up since it is lighter weight. both Firefox and Chrome reportedly work well in Windows (I have used Firefox on Windows XP, but stopped upgrading my Windows boxes a few years ago). I use Firefox almost exclusively these days (although it is beginning to get a bit bloated of late). Especially long threads (>200 replies) tend to load a bit slower, but they do load in Firefox.

Same happened to me when I joined CR4 and I was using IE(don't remember the version). I then tried through with Chrome - it still persisted. I was recommended Firefox and since then I'm guys.

To answer the other question:

Both of you are right in different contexts.

AC current is limited by skin depth which is a function of frequency DC flows through the whole cross section.

What does skin depth resistance effects have to do with the age of Charles Dickens when he wrote "A Tale Of Two Cities"?

Skin depth is directly related to the sharpness of the guillotine

Re: Cannot Get Replies

Lehman57~:

You are getting replies - but with no content - and then you get the IE "cannot display the web page".

I have very occasionally had a very similar problem and when I do I am offered alternatives such as "IE is not working, click here to fix"and so on. I am running Vista here and this is a Vista issue, I suspect. I also run Win7 but have not had sufficient run time on that to amass any releveant experience.

For real help from IT professionals try PCSoft; I have always had good IT stuff from them.

Explain your problem precisely; tell them what hardware you are running, what the software is, OS, Browser etc, any factors that might help such as was the connection down at around that time. Explain, as precisely as you can, what your perception of your problem is. Offer any measurements that you have made, correlations with other things and so on. I would also fire your problem at PCBuild which is the hardware variant and their split of responsibilities puts OS stuff into their Build forum.

Having written that I have noticed that any problms of a similar nature here are often correlated with connection problems. I keep a copy of my Router Config on the Desktop so that I can rapidly access that, speed, outages etc

Good Luck,

I will see anything that you put up on either of these forums.
