98 Chevy Cavalier z24

08/29/2010 12:22 AM

98 Cavalier z24 with 180,000 miles. I have had this car for 9 years and experience intermittent rpm accelerations at all speeds. The RPM's will flutter at a consistent speed from 2-5, if you press the accelerator it will run normal. This car will act up and for days and then will run great for months. Most of the time it will not give any codes. The engine light does not usual come on- once in a while the ABS light will come on when we have this problem. We have changed the catalytic converter, coil pack (x4) , 02 sensors. I have seen some other post the lead me to believe it may be my ECM.

A lot of time an ABS light coming on can be a sign that the alternator is starting to go. If the voltage output starts to decrease the ABS is one of the most sensitive items in the car to power and will start to show issues, sometimes before the battery light of the car. I would check the alternator output at idle, it may be too low and then when you step on the gas and increase RPM the output increases enough that all runs normal. Good Luck!

Thanks, I will have that checked. It does have the original alternator, so it could be a possibility.

Check for what I think is called a TPS or TPC. It may be called something similar. I beleive it is short form for "throttle position sencor" or "controll". I have seen this before.

I had similar problem and it was throttle position sensor, although I would experience it only when the peddle was pressed to a certain position. Manual transmission with shift and gas wore out the sensor.

I don't know a thing about the Cavalier, but any time I hear of a pulsating idle, my first thought is "Is your air conditioning ON?" The compressor cycling on and off will cause the idle to change.
