Cannot Find Alternator's Suppliers/Manufacturers

08/30/2010 5:55 AM

Can anyone help me with where to look for if you want to convert shaft power into electrical power for a sterling engine we intend to develop. I searched a lot using electrical power generators and alternators but of no avail. They just show the alternators with diesel/gasoline etc powered generators. Where as I need an alternator.

Ah! Thoroughly searched global spec no help from there, apparently there is no one manufacturing anything under the name of "alternators" but thanks anyways...

What is an alternator?

Of course wiki does answer (I checked up) though not very precisely or let us say unambiguously.

However if the OP goes through it and checks up the meaning of alternator then it may be clear. Though I am not clear about what the OP wants.Does he need an alternator? what KVA/MVA?, RPM? It should be more or less available off the shelf unless it is very odd RPM and in that case why go for alternator? may be better off with Induction generator or solid state converters along with a normal alternator.

I Googled "alternator manufacturers" and got quite a few hits, including manufacturers in various countries. This makes me wonder if your Google access is restricted.

One horsepower equals 746 watts (by definition); reciprocally, 1 kw ≈ 1.34 hp. This assumes 100% efficiency. To allow for inefficiencies, starting motors, and continuous vs. intermittent duty, you would need something like 2 hp per kw.

Our sterling engine is expected to produce 10 kW of power, so you are saying I should be using an alternator capable of 20 hp ?

You get an alternator of KVA capacity and not KW.

Assuming (as we take standard) 0.8 pf, you should get an 12.5KVA alternator atleast or the next higher say 15KVA

It's the other way around: a 20-hp engine would be roughly reasonable for a 10-kw generator/alternator.
