Question for Force Calcution

Dear Sir, I'm a Mechanical Draughtsman and we make Hydraulic press M/C.I want a formula of force calcution, my question is:-

I have a mild steel plate (600X600X5MM). I want bend it 25MM from each side to out side on 30°. Now what is the Force in Tonneg and what is the calculate formula of this question.

Hi jatin65,

If you make hydraulic presses, why can't you use a load cell and measure the force? I'm sure that there is empirical data out there but, because of differences in mild steel alloys, it would be best to take measurements.

It is highly inadvisable to post an e-mail address in an international forum. E-mail addresses are easily harvested by spambots. As is stated in a previous response, the results will vary depending on the grade of steel used. You need to know the tensile strength of the steel. Once you exceed the tensile stress the steel will remain bent after deformation. Tensile stress for mild steels can range from 30,000 to over 100,000 psi.

The formula you will be using will be

stress = Moment (in lbs) x c (1/2 thickness of steel (in.)) / I (moment of inertia)

stress = M x (0.0984 in) / (0.01499 in^4)

stress = M x 0.152 in^3

The moment required for 30,000 psi steel would be M = 30000 / 0.152 = 197,000 in lbs.

I concur with the guest. your answer is wrong.

Allow me to point out the obvious first. You need to exceed the yield strength not the tensile. Yield strength is the point of permanent distortion. Tensile is the ultimate strength of the material. You can figure out the rest.
