Partial Discharge Testing

09/02/2010 4:57 PM

Can someone please help me? The company that I work for owns a Ldic PD Smart Partial Discharge test equipment which is driven by a Doble M4000. Our technicians have no problems with performing the tests, the problem that I have is that I have to write the reports & need someone to explain to me "How do I interprate the test results"? Looking at the paterns I need to know what the result is telling me, is there discharge within the windings & where is this discharge is taking place, such as in the slot, on the end winding, within the coil etc. I know that the PD test results can reveal that there are numerous faults in different areas of the winding, see example test result attached. I need to know what I am writting in the report as these reports are given to engineers.

If the technicians understand the reports why not get them to write them?

The technicians dont understand the reporting side either, they have only been trained on how to perform the tests.

Well, there must be an explanation that has been written for the <...tests...>, which is called a Test Protocol or a Test Procedure. Otherwise, the test is only a measurement.

Clearly <...The technicians...> require more training.

If your company have invested in the test equipment surely investment in training should have gone along with it.

It must impress your clients when you give test results on their machine saying "yes there's something wrong, but we don't know what"

My reaction if I asked you to perform the tests on a machine of mine would be "gross incompetence".

There's no point having the test facility if you can't use it!

LDIC is part of Doble Engineering, and I know that Doble is very good about providing technical support for their clients (which you must be if you have an M4000). Doble usually will do training for their products at minimal cost for clients, and will also provide interpretation of test results. Have you submitted this to your Doble client engineer? That's what you pay Doble big bucks for!
