Electronic Display - Multimeter Specification

09/04/2010 5:25 AM

1) In case of multimeter and other electronic displays, there is some specification like 4 1/2, 3 6/7 etc... What does it means? When I asked this question to a technician. I got the answer as 4 1/2 means there will be 4 digits and after decimal point there will be a digit. If so, why it is mentioned as 4 1/2? What about 3 6/7? Is there any generalized rule for representing display like this?

2) My second question is regarding electronic displays there is another type of specification like 12000d, 60000d etc... Is it for mentioning illumination level? If so whether 12000d means 12000 micro candella? If not please tell me the right answer.

Having read your other posts in electrical engineering section I would suggest.

A/ do your own homework

B/ try Google

As for 3 6/7th looks on Google for "The Goons + Buebottle"

4 1/2 means that the multimeter can display four significant digits and the first one, as 1 or 0. For example 1234.5 V.

If the voltage is 2345.6 V, your meter will display 2345 V.

About 3 6/7....Never heard of it!

Find the datasheet of the multimeter, 'Gossen Metrawatt Metrahit Extra' you can find 4 6/7 display, for 'Gossen metrawatt metrahit world' you can see 3 3/4 display. What about this?

No, a spec for 4 1/2 digits means there are 4 complete digits capable of showing the numbers 0 through 9, plus another digit (often the leading digit) that may (or may not) show only a few digits; often just the number 1.

So the reading will show for example 99.99, then roll over to 100.00. But when it gets to 199.99 it then rolls over to 200.0 (i.e., only showing 4 digits). The decimal is usually a floating point.

A 3 digit display can a show a maximum value of up to 999.

A 4 digit display up to 9999.

A 3 1/2 means you can get an extra 1 in the most significant digit and thus is twice as good 1999.
