Eye Glasses to See Light Wavelength 1250-1650nm

09/04/2010 1:47 AM

Are there any eyeglasses that can see light wavelength of 1250nm - 1650nm?

No. Not without a lot of additional equipment.

Regardless of what optics you employ, your eyes are only sensitive to wavelengths from about 380 nm to 750 nm. In order to "see" light of longer wavelengths (infrared) you will need an electronic sensor that is sensitive to these wavelengths and a means of amplifying the output to drive a display such as a CRT or LC display with a proportional output in the visible spectrum.

you can see infra red with gen 1 image intensifiers ( night vision Goggles)

and via sony CCD chips as used on their sony cam corders if this is any use.

what is the application ?

I know that the Gen III goggles are sensitive only out to about 950 nm. (They are spec'd to only 930 nm.) I don't think the old Gen I's have a wider sensitivity than any of the newer ones. Regular electronic cameras and camcorders have silicon based detectors and are good out to 1100 nm.

I think you'd need a special IR camera to see out at 1250 to 1650 nm.

thanks for the information.

Do this Goggles can see these light wavelengths? actually the range requirement is just from 1520nm-1570. i'm involve in the passive components manufacturing and i need to see those wavelength during our assembly

thanks

There is a wide range of cameras and viewers on the market. Most are designed either for the near-infrared region to 1100 nm, or for the thermal range beyond 2 microns. You'll need to find one that is optimized for viewing at around 1550 nm. Try the company linked below. They appear to offer an extensive range of cameras, so perhaps one of them will meet your needs.

There are lots of binoculars or monoculars on the market for night vision that use IR light to illuminate the area. It follows that these would be able to see the IR light.

All of these use an image intensifier.

All of these use an image intensifier.

This may be true but they could still match the OPs requirement.

Some are affordable like these, might be worth a try to see if they pick up the wavelengths specified.

Hi,

passive optics are principally unable to convert long wavelengths to short wavelengths.

This would be an increase in energy, so how?

So get a camera without IR filter, 1650 may be a bit too far, beware of sensitivity over wavelength, use some wavelength to color coding algorithm and you will have what you want.

This is often done in (amateur and professional) astronomical photography.

If you have to go really to 1650nm then you may need a lens made from quartz-glass or sapphire or other materials transparent into near IR.

Get an EO-AM C3 and hook them up to a pair of these then you should be able to run that fiber-optic right into your visial cortex ... Mork from Ork told me it works just fine. Geordi still has not returned my phone call ... something about the space time continuum. When he calls back, I'll ask him where he got his.

I have found that my cell phone camera can see the light from the TV remote control, which is in the near infrared.

Do you need to image at these wavelengths or just detect their presence?

These photo-diodes cover the range you specify.

Yes, about 20 years ago I saw a few of them in some adds in the back of a Boys Life(Boy Scouts) magazine. Actually they were X-ray glasses, sorry. Joking aside, as everyone has mentioned the only way to to use an image converter.

You can do some neat stuff with a night vision capable video camera by removing the IR filter. You would be amazed at what IR light can pass through such as cotton, certain plastics and a bunch of other materials. It is often used for failure analysis on IC chips. The image produce looks like a color X-ray showing all of the traces and circuits and more importantly the hot spots that can indicate a short. Search google and you can find a bunch of directions to turn certain video cameras into an IR camera. Also as mentioned there are different sections of wavelength that are considered IR such as near IR but I don't think the modification I mentioned will get you to the range you are looking for.

Hope this helped.

Brian

I have recently done research on IR imagers and found this site to be useful:

http://downloads.pennnet.com/pnet/surveys/vsd/0911vsd-cameradir.pdf

Less than 3um is considered NIR so look for these.

Night Vision uses photo-multiplier tubes and is not suitable in applications where IR imaging is required.
