One that gives an accurate relationship between the altitude and the read-out.

How about an ordinary aneroid barometer? Change the scale to read metres altitude.

Cheers...........Codey

How about an absolute pressure gauge, preferably scaled for vacuum? i.e. at sea level it reads zero (zero vacuum, zero altitude), figures rising as altitude increases.

You need to make your own scale to read altitude. E.g. when pressure = 0.1 bar, altitude ~ 850 m. Also scale is not linear after the first few 100 m - at 8 km pressure is practically zero.

Cheers.........Codey

I'm not with you. What has that to do with my post #7? Are you still talking about an altimeter?

An absolute pressure gauge does not need a microcontroller.

With each comment, you tell us another bit or piece that places limits on the correct solution. anish, are there any more restrictions you can tell us about? (Only spend $20.00 USD, mass limit of 400 gram, must also operate as depth gauge)

You will also need a trap to keep the bong water out of the sensor.

Good idea though, being able to tell how high you are.

How about an empty balloon with a knot in the end anchored to the bottom of the bong. Pressure decreases with altitude, balloon expands, water rises, bong goes out! You're at cruising altitude.
