Embedded processor and software

03/09/2007 12:35 AM

I am quite interested in developing industrial data acquisition and control solutions. I want to "get started" creating my own designs - PLCs, pressure/temp./flow sensors etc.

In trying to find microprocessor/software packages, I am finding that, in order to be able to develop a decent program size, the software generally runs into at least 2 - 3 thousand dollars.

Does anyone out there know of any cheaper solutions?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello!I recommend you use this program :

Logic Master 90m

to programming PLC.

If you wish to use microcontrollers Zilog offers innexpesive and very capable solutions with debug boards including development environemnts under $50 US.

It all depends on the scale and level of sophistication you desire.

There are PLC based solutions and embedded processor solutions, including those running Windows.

For situations that can utilize it, the software is actually ridiculously cheap when you consider the cost of developing your own. These programs range to the very sophisticated plant control systems, but even the lower end ones make process control straightforward.

Hello Mikerho,

have a look at wilke-technology.com. Here you find a fine SW-package and pre-configured multitasking modules able to do thousands of applications.

I don`t know you personally so I don`t know your technical and financial background as well as your possible customers.
Its not that I dont believe that there are other, possible "better" solutions (whatever that is ...) but when you start you have to be able to get your solutions quickly and safe in order to earn money - otherwise your start fails. Development is (mostly) no source of fabulous wealth and so doing less development and more sales is often good.

Best luck Uwe

If you are looking into programming PLCs I have no useful help to offer.

If you are looking into programming microcontrollers (little "chip" that needs supporting circuitry to interface with industry type signals) then I would like to offer help. Whether or not it's usefull I don't know ;-)

I started out in the well developed world of 8051 family of devices. Good, but not many "freeware" development platforms that would build a program much over 2k code space. Then in classes I've played with more 8051 varients, PICs, ARMs (32bit monster uControllers) as well as 4bit baby micros. My most favorite that I fell in love with is the AVR family of 8bit microcontrollers from Atmel. There are plenty of freeware development and a couple of hundred bucks will get you a couple good books and all the harware toys you need to keep you busy for months. To be fair PIC has a very good following with a great deal of support. However, I don't like programming them for various reasons that are probably beyond the scope of this thread. Sorry for the almost spammy post bragging up AVRs, but of my experience with microcontrollers they are my favorite.

I started out in assembly language, and now prefer C. I use AVR Studio IDE (integrated development envrionment) and compile with WinAVR (AVR-GCC toolchain) plugin. I program my AVRs with iether a Butterfly (Atmel promo product) or my STK500. I get my tech support from the plethera of datasheets and application notes from Atmel and keep up to date on tech at AVR freaks (dot) net.

Best of luck in what ever you do, and if this is what you're after I'd be glad to give ya some more pointers if ya want.

hello juba-jabba

There is SDCC Open source C compiler for microprocessors MCS51/52 and varients from Dallas,Analogue Devices etc. & AVR.This compiler will compile program with maximum code size of chip (64 KB for MCS51/52) . You may down load it from net .
