Probably not. It sounds illegal to me. There would be nothing to keep people from stealing stuff and using the software to hijack security codes.

I'd contact the seller or the manufacturer.

Hello Ragab.

How do you know it is working fine if it will not communicate?

And, as lynlynch sort of asked you, how or where did you get this used modem? If one is stolen, it is designed such that it will not operate.

There's a saying, "Caveat emptor that is probably due here.

The seller should have given the code to you, if he had it. And you should have known you might need one. No manual, either?

Once again, software that broke security codes would be illegal.

Send a picture. Someone may help you.

In general, there are two possibilities here : 1) The wireless modem is set up with an encryption phrase. This is probably to be expected. Or 2) The previous owner has set the administrator password to something other than the factory default.

If the administrator password has been set and you cannot get this from whoever sold you the modem, then you are probably not going to be able to do anything.

If it is just the encryption passphrase and the admin password is standard, then you can probably get into it and find out what the phrase is, or change it to something else.

If you an google the brand and model of your modem, you should be able to find the instruction manual, this will guide you on the fine details.

As others have said, any software that could detect the password would be illegal. In many cases there is a reset button on the modem/router that will set the unit to factory defaults, and give you a short time, like 5 minutes, to reset the password. But to do so, you probably need to know the default password, the administrator name (commonly 'admin'), and the IP address of the unit, so without the manual for that specific unit, you are probably out of luck.

Also, the modem is useless without an internet provider, so even if you could somehow get the laptop to communicate correctly with the modem, it might still be useless. In my experience, when you sign a contract with an internet provider, the modem is provided free.

Re: Computer Wireless Modem

if the modem has an Ethernet port (like a telephone cable plug hole only bigger) you connect your pc and the modem up, and then get the name of the modem and do internet search to get the address of the modem ie its unique address this will allow you to talk directly with the modem with no security protocols, you will then be able to set up your own security settings via the Ethernet cable once set up you can then transfer the information the computer needs to log onto the modem wireless.

Easy really, Yea right

read some of these links

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wireless+modem+router+address&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=&rlz=1I7GGLT_en&redir_esc=&ei=fUyNTLqfN5G7jAebxOiYBg

tell me what make the router is.

and if it has Ethernet port at rear

You have a major problem then.

You need a hacker or the security codes.

Sorry i have no idea how to get either

this is the best i can do

The Only way to reset from scratch and cancel the encrypted password set up previously is to connect directly to the modem via ethernet cable+ PC.

If you cannot get to the modem because it is locked up somewhere upstairs and YOU bought it from a garage sales, then I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE THE OWNER OF THIS PURCHASE... YOU might be trying to hack into someone elses Modem Illegaly Otherwise, just break down your door and access it...(?)

If you don't even have physical access to the modem it sounds suspiciously like you are trying to hijack your neighbors internet connection..

He is dishonest as he said he bought the modem on a garage sale. Now it is in a locked up room!

Do not help him. If anything he wants to do exactly what you say - break into a secured wireless network.

GA for the first sensible and fully correct post when reading down from the top of this blog!!!

For the OP:-

By the way, with good wireless modems, at least the WPA security functionality or better will be used.

If the wireless modem only has WEP, then bin it, as that has been fully cracked for some years and you could get into REAL trouble with people using your modem illegally for child porn or worse......in most countries that I have heard of, you may be held responsible....correctly to my mind.....

Re: Computer Wireless Modem

Basically all you should need to do is a hard reset with a wire paper clip upon power up insert and wait at least 15 seconds then release then ping it at 192.168.0.1 or find out its ip address and ping it. Once it asks you for the un pw simply enter: admin admin...

Then you should be inside its setup applet; if not then recycle it by tossing it over your head backwards into your bin; then go buy a real router that will work without a headache! I prefer the cisco linksys wrt45 or any later wireless router which will allow one to add in a high gain antenna. I have found this model to be the very best and most reliable for my high use needs available off tiger direct cheap...

Illegal. . . what are you talking about and what law is being broken exactly? I want a specific here. . . geez, not one good answer for an honest problem.

Look on the back of the modem for a small hole. Insert something small enough to fit into said hole, then push until you feel something depress, do this for a least 8 seconds. This is to reset your modem.

Then follow the instructions at this page: http://www.ehow.com/how_5997108_do-access-wireless-modem_.html

to setup security/encryption, use WPA, WEP is obsolete, but better than no encryption.

If this doesn't work, I would assume your modem is made by one of the following: linksys, netgear, or quest, in that order: go to their respective sites and find out how to reset and encrypt their wireless modems direct from their sites.

Best, Sam

When Guest says he bought the modem at a garage sale, and yet it is in a locked room for which he has no key, it certainly sounds like someone trying to get internet access via his neighbor's wireless, without permission. THAT is illegal!
