CNC Serial Problem

09/13/2010 3:47 PM

Hi, On a CNC machine it has just serial port connection. It is a fairly old unit. However it communicates with a PC via a Windows based software program.

Due to the newer laptops not having a serial port, we are using a USB to Serial Port Converter.

However the physical cable that links between the CNC and the USB 2 Serial Cable is just a normal interface cable.

I am looking for a solution to get rid of these cables and use just wireless.

Is there an Industrial version of Serial to Wireless that can be connected on this CNC machine.

And in turn can I use the laptops normal wireless connection to communicate to it.

Please remember that the software used connects using normal Comm Ports IRQ's and Comm Ports Addresses.

I would appreciate any replies that may be of use.

Thanking You,

Adrian.

These data radios are transparent to your serial data and are available in a number of configurations for power and protocol.

You might try Googling Serial to Bluetooth Converter or Adapter- there are too many hits to come up with a recommendation. I have experimented with one from B & B Electronics that worked pretty well for data acquisition applications...

There may be a timing issue, however. On other blogs I have read of timing issues with USB to serial converters when used for CNC, although I am not experienced with this.

Try CNC Zone forum, there are loads of threads on this subject, and Im sure someone will recommend a vendor, I about to repalce my shop computer, I will have to make sure it comes with a serial port for the RS-232 cable.

Try B&B Electronics, they have many legacy RS-232 products. If I remember correctly, they also have wireless and radio modem solutions. Any of their application engineers should be able to help you. MRH

I would tend to say DON'T!!

I think you may regret doing this if any problems ever occur......as you will be on your own faultfinding....

My suggestion is to note what interfaces you have on the laptop and look on ebay and see if they sell a Com port plugin.......get advice from CNCZone before parting with your money...

Or just buy a slightly older PC or laptop with a com port as standard.....they are usually cheap....
