09/14/2010 12:20 AM

Is it possible for a relay to trip due to a near aerth fault, it seems to be the case in our plant when a dissconected relay tripped when an etarh fault was present in a near line.

The problem isn't the relay. The problem is the earth fault. Seek it out and eliminate it.

More information may throw light on how a disconnected relay may trip. One obvious cause is the uncompensated mutual coupling -This may occur with a parallel feeder which is operating with one feeder out of service and grounded at both ends-The trip impulse may be blocked with say a breaker interlock. 50BF tripping is strange-how it was primed-is it heavy induction or lack of shielding.Perhaps the scheme may be rechecked carefully.50BF tripping can cause wide spread avoidable outage and will require involved analysis to trace out the cause.
