UV Ballasts

03/09/2007 12:05 PM

II have been told by several people (not EE's but contracting persons) that the ballasts used for fluorescent lights are the same as those used for UV lights. Is this correct, or are there differences in that would render use of fluorescent lamp ballasts non-functional for this use?

It depends on the type of fluorescent bulb and UV bulb you are talking about, in general the answer is probably. I have personally used a regular fluorescent ballast to light both a germicidal (UV-C) bulb and a black light (UV-A) bulb, for my application both worked fine. If you are unsure I would find out the voltage, current and also if the bulb requires anything special to start up, if they match what the ballast is intended for you should be fine.

Some U.V. lamps are simply fluorescents without the phosphor coating, which

converts the U.V to visible light. (Hence the term fluorescent).

The wattage is the factor to determine if the ballast is suitable.

Actually the germicidal lamps are made of fused quartz because it passes the short wave UV that, by the way, is very dangerous to your eyes and skin. Black lights and regular florescent lamps use a regular glass envelope that will not pass the UV line of the mercury vapor plasma.
