Planning and Scheduling

09/16/2010 4:49 AM

Hi all,

What is the difference between Planning and Scheduling? Let's say operation planning vs operation schedule.

Thank you,

Hien

In terms of what they are intended to achieve, absolutely nothing.

PWSlack:

To be honest, now I know it is nothing different between them. So, it would be very stupid that we make two separated files namely planning and schedule, wouldn't it?

It will be crazy for ones who read them and dont undersantand which one they should follow.

It doesn't matter. It's the result that is important, not the process, stupid or otherwise.

A plan determines what operations are to be performed.

A schedule determines when those operations are to be performed.

You can plan a schedule or...

You can schedule a plan.

Or they can be merged into one.

Something similar can be applied to almost anything.

Thanks lyn,

Good to see you out and about. It was looking like you had created a new bathtub. One is probably good.

Prepping for a week at the beach. Fishing and crabbing......No CR4!!!

Leave Sat. AM. I'll try to have fun. It'll be hard though not to be thinking about your rail caps while I'm gone.

I hope it works, we'll have to start over if it doesn't.

There might be a little drinking involved. I just have to remember to leave the general public alone......they typically don't have the sense of humor found here.....or at least they don't think I'm funny.

Did you end up with the vinyl adhesive stealth stripes or some other black stuff? You need to post pics when done with some other comedic remarks, that was funny "stuff"

I will, if it ever cools off around here. It's supposed to be 108°F here today.

The instructions say to not put the goop on if the rails are hot.

Maybe this week end.

Planning:

what is your job & how will excute it ?

Scheduling :

when and by whom the job is done?

Re: Planning and Scheduling

Dear hien, This is not rocket science ….... but it is difficult. I will give you some advise from what I have to do each day on planning..... scheduling is another manner (I may run out of ink). If I am reading you correctly, you have to accomplish ( get others to ) multiple tasks, with a limited number of time and personnel.... I would suggest that you plan for a steep learning curve, whenever you institute change. Plan first what is most important then........... put it on a dead line. Get feedback from those assigned. Then (seem to).....Ignore those who say it cannot be accomplished, and wait for them to figure it out. (a tactic that sometimes works wonders). Make your people try …..to do their best, and a little more besides. Reward success and remember failures. People need a tract to run on (Plan). As a planner you can overwhelm them with expectations that have little resemblance to the reality's in the field. Reward your top 20 %. Train your middle 70% and let the bottom 10% find a place better suited to their abilities. scheduling ........ should be attempted with knowledge of site specific conditions. Hope these assumptions are helpful. Ray
