Manual Ward No. 8 Turret Lathe

09/20/2010 7:30 AM

I am looking for a workshop manual for a Ward no 8 Turret lathe.

If somebody knows how the clutch and spindle brake works please tell me.

I am overhauling this machine and I am not familiar with it.

Thanks for your help.

Here is a site where you can purchase the manual, but it is expensive.

Good luck

Hello Johan,

I use a Ward No 8 a lot from screw cutting 2 inch Acme threads and nuts to turning out hundreds of small acetal wheels for sliding doors and everything in between. The clutch and brake combination does give me strife. I renewed the brake band but now the clutch drums are slipping badly. If changing the type of oil I use doesn't fix it then I'm going to get it lined with a non slip material (clutch lining). I'll let you know what happens and if necessary send you the set up details, although it's pretty simple. I keep the outer cover off so it's really easy to get at. (Don't get caught up in it as it won't stop for mere humans!) I run 11 lathes (autos and turret lathes, no computers in sight), mills, benders etc. Cutting Edge Engineering Ltd. New Zealand. In the heart of the shaky city of Christchurch. (In the last earthquake 2 lathes weighing 2 tons each were moved about a metre and all the drill presses fell over, one on me, and they're damned heavy! They're all chained up now but the building, a tilt slab is pretty damaged. The floor sinks 160 mm over 20 metres and the rain comes in between the slabs at times. Internal gutters run the wrong way and the mezanine office floor is held up by gib nails alone. All the reinforced glass in the apex of the roof fell out, the brave usar pricks smashed the door and the main roller door lintel is cracked and we don't know the state of the steel beam inside it.) Apart from that everything's fine and it's business as usual although I've told everybody to run like hell if there is another. That's hard too with the ground heaving and things crashing all round. Cheerful eh?

Colin Lewis.

Hi Colin,

You guys are having a real bad run at the moment, I am keeping my fingers crossed that it does not give us any probs in NSW. At least once it settles down in NZ you should expect a long and happy run of calm.

I did not know the Ward No 8 used brake bands and drums, but considering the size of the machine it is to be expected.

I run the small 2A model and have a 2DS with pegboard in the wings they use a sliding disc clutch pressed up against an adjustable loaded spring arrangement which works very well. If I had the space I would have chased up a larger machine, they are built like the proverbial brick **and seem like they would last forever. For manual collet chuck work they are great.

I hope things get better soon.

Garth.

Hello Colin,

I managed to get a manual from Lathes/UK.

I still have a problem with the turret not indexing properly, but I should sort it out sometime.

I have sympathy for your situation but unfortunately I cannot help. As we say in South Africa "Sterkte byt vas" translated as " stay strong hold on".

No place on earth is perfect but I have always wondered what makes people stay in places where mother nature is cross, like in the earth quake belts or around active volcanoes, or even worse in the arctics. Of all places I stay in South Africa, we don't have earth quakes, volcanoes, hurricanes or even snow, but we have Africa which is violent, technically lacking, financially unstable, badly governed and the majority living in utmost poverty (not even mentioning HIV and Aids, TB and Malaria).

I suppose to transplant a tree is not easy.

Best of luck,

Johan van Niekerk.
