New PLC

09/25/2010 12:56 PM

In our small commercial Bakery, I have two Mondial Forni three deck tunnel ovens, with a Siemens S5 PLC 's (circa 1994).... all digital inputs, 19 motors each, and Honeywell flame control. We are in the contemplating an upgrading to a new PLC. Our recent experience purchasing I/O modules from Siemens has been fraught with long delivery times. My question is.... What are the relevant concerns in choosing between Allen Bradley, Siemens, ABB.,or others PLC's? Siemens support here in Middle USA is lacking (in my humble opinion). My concern with AB is that it is to proprietary, and seems to be costly on the software side. Are the generic PLC's coming of age? Any suggestions, would be appreciated.

Hi klearzen,

I would look at the OCS PLC's by Horner APG. You can put together a reasonably sized system for a reasonable price. Unlike Allen Bradley and other big-name PLC vendors, the CScape programming software is free (No disclaimer here; I will receive nor accept any compensation for this endorsement).

I have used and programmed these PLC's and would recommend them for certain applications. Yours appears to be one.

Mike

Dear Mike, Thank you for your suggestion and the link. I hope to have a few preliminary bids in hand by the end of next week. I 'am looking to gather information and hone down the options available, before we jump into this new project. We are suffering from a sales boon and all of our equipment is being taxed to the limit. The Bakery owners are away on a fact finding mission, looking to hook up with the oven manufacturer this weekend. I hope we can pull the trigger on this plan soon. Again thank you Mike.

I don't have any financial connection with them, but I have used Automation Direct for most of my PLC and control applications and I love them. They have everything that you need at an affordable price along with good customer support. www.automationdirect.com

Check out their web site. I mean everything that you need, from a PLC or PAC to the box to put it in and the wire to hook it up.

Their delivery is NEXT DAY!

Their products work, and work well and reliably in any industrial environment.

Dear Greg, Thank you for your help.

I wish I could say this project went off with out a hitch, but instead it was moved to the back burner, while we do a new bread line install. Your help in the sourcing is greatly appreciated. again thank you

Ray

I second GringoGreg's comments regarding AutomationDirect.

Though I use A.B. controllers and can vouch for their high quality, they are expensive.

I have not used the AutomationDirect controllers yet, but they are very reasonably priced and span the whole range in performance from small to large scale controls.

I have used their "C-More" HMI panels and find them very easy to use, cost-effective and high quality. I have also purchased control relays, pressure sensors and enclosures from AutomationDirect and agree that they ship quick (and usually lower priced than the competition).

Good luck on your project!
