CRT Hopefully my Last Questions

09/25/2010 2:16 PM

Good day to all,

What type of glue or hard sealant is used to join the funnel to the front panel?

What type of metal (or alloy) is used on the funnel, it is a two section black piece attached with a clip. It is at least 1/4" thick and it is quite heavy for its size?

What type of metal is used in the strap around the front panel?

Is there mercury inside the Cathode Ray Tube: is it like a neon tubular light that contains mercury under vacuum to permit excitement of phosphor? If so, how can we recover it when we eliminate the vacuum and separate the funnel from the front panel?

What kind of acid or alkaline solutions will dissolve the mercury if there is some.

I did appreciated all your answers of my last message and I hope that you will help me again.

I wellcome any suggestions of website or books or article that me be helpfull.

Have a good day and thank you in advance.

Hubert Lefebvre

What type of glue or hard sealant is used to join the funnel to the front panel?

I'm pretty sure it is not a glue but is a glass frit; a type of glass/ceramic that melts at a low temperature (for glass) and fuses the two main pieces of the CRT together.

What type of metal (or alloy) is used on the funnel, it is a two section black piece attached with a clip. It is at least 1/4" thick and it is quite heavy for its size?

I don't know what is around your CRT, but sometimes there is a type of steel used around the yoke called mumetal, used for it's magnetic shielding properties.

What type of metal is used in the strap around the front panel?

I believe it's steel, but I don't know offhand what alloy. It is heated so it expands, then once it is installed and cools it provides an extreme amount of tension on the mounting ears and the tube as a whole to stabilize the tube and help provide implosion protection in case the tube gets shattered.

Is there mercury inside the Cathode Ray Tube: is it like a neon tubular light that contains mercury under vacuum to permit excitement of phosphor? If so, how can we recover it when we eliminate the vacuum and separate the funnel from the front panel?

No, there is no mercury. Mercury would interfere with the electron beam. In fact once the tube is completely sealed and evacuated the 'getter' is fired to eliminate any residual impurities.

What kind of acid or alkaline solutions will dissolve the mercury if there is some.

I'd be concerned about collecting/containing the heavy metals in the phosphors.

A long time ago I worked for an electronics company, designing cockpit displays for military aircraft. I sometimes visited CRT manufacturers that made customs units, and I was usually shown the various steps in the assembly process.

Cool! (I guess I'm revealing my age). I would have loved being in your shoes!

I am a ChemE who wishes he would have gone EE.

Thanks Usbport!

Mikerho

I am happy and sorry to read your comments.

Happy to learn some grammatical rules of English.

Sorry to see that you did not understand my questions.

I would like you to translate my small article in French.

You live in America like I do, when we refer to America it is usually North America and I am a French speaking Canadian that does it best to write in English.

Thank you for your help and sorry for my bad English.

Hubert Lefebvre (a French name) from a suburb of Montréal.
