Method to Check High Voltage Spark Test for FBE Coated Pipe

09/26/2010 3:45 AM

Please need help from CR-superiors on below given matter because client rigid to use only ring method not brush method.

High Voltage Holiday Test (DC)

Is there any hard & fast rule to use ring method only for FBE coated pipe or we can apply BRUSH method also to detect the discontinuities.

Object=12"seamless pipe (underground) - 20mtrs. approx.

Thanks,

Adeel-TR

There's no hard & fast rule for use of method to detect. The objection from your client seems to be that the entire area may not be covered by using the brush instead of the ring mehod.

The best method that I have found would detect any defect is not using brush or ring but a blunt edged single electrode where the potential is concentrated and spark is generated more efficiently on the surface around the end.

Thanks Mr.Kasharma,

Exactly there was matter to cover all coated areas, In actual our company not having ring and we gave suggestion to our client that we will do overlapping of brush movement on coated surface to cover all areas but his comment was as below,

'Brush method is only can apply over coating of welding joints or small damages'

So my earlier question was related to his above comments ………Is it really its referred by any codes/standard that brush method specifically used for weld joints/small damages only????

Thanks,
