Silicone Joints and Anti-Stick Products

03/11/2007 4:59 AM

I live in an old house with doors and windows that are not fitting well.

Several years ago I purchased a product feeling like a paste of soap. It was put on one side, on the other side silicone was spread. The door was closed and after curing the door could be opened again and now their was a perfect fit of the silicone joint.

Is anyone knowing how I could make such a product myself, or have a solution.

Soap? vaseline?

Thanks

Thanks

Cut yourself some long strips of plastic bag, say 2.5 cm wide.

Clean one side only of the gap to be fixed with methylated spirits or similar. Use nothing that leaves a film of any sort.

On this now clean side, put a long bead (strip?) of silicone sealer, gently pat the long strips of plastic bag onto it, just touching it to hold in position, close the door/window gently, wait on hour. trim off the plastic bag where no silicone is, now you have a good gasket.

The strips of plasic bag work like the soap in your previous version, but as to whether soap will work here, I do not know, perhaps you might like to experiment yourself and let us know!!

The more silicone you use, the wider the sealing joint you make!

Thanks a lot. This looks as a very good and practical solution.

Some basic tools may prove a reasonable investment: no.5 metal plane; rebate plane; 25mm chisel. Screwdrivers to fit hinge screws. Paint and paintbrushes to touch up the wood...

It worked for me many years ago when I had no money for new windows! Now I have new windows, but the trick above held over 20 years with very little maintenance.

You may want to use a sharp knife and a straight edge to make the appearance neater.....sorry, I forgot to mention that before, leave a band about 1-2 cm wide as a minimum.
