Medium & Low Voltage Cable

09/27/2010 1:20 PM

Dear all,

i would like to ask your expert openion if it is allow by any electrical code to lay together in one cable tray the medium voltage cable (13.8 KV) and and a low voltage cable (400 volts). both cables are xlpe/pvc insulated & 4 cores. If so allowed is their any specified standard space between the 2 cables with different voltage? My Boss say it is ok (anyway he is an Electrical Engineer while me is only an electrical technology graduate). But i once read in this forum that it is not allowed. can you explain tome if it is allowable or not. thanks very much.

If this is in the U.S., the aurhoritative answer would be in the most recent edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC). You should obtain a copy.

The short answer is no, all cables in the tray must be rated the same.

NEC permits type MC (Article 330) and type MV (Article 328) in industrial establishments where qualified persons will service the installation. Multiconductor cables rated over 600 volts shall be separated from lower voltage cables by a separate cable tray or a solid fixed barrier. Type MC cables can be mixed with lower voltage cables.

It seems that your boss is not electrical engineer.
