Torque Values for Anchor Bolts

03/11/2007 11:11 PM

What are the Torque values for the tightning of anchor bolts (diffrent diameters & Grade) for follwing cases

  1. Static Equipment erected on Concrete Foundations
  2. Static Equipment Erected on steel structures
  3. Rotory Equipment erected on Concrete foundations
  4. Rotary Equpment Erected on Steel structure

Is it possible to get a Table showin these valus for Varios diiameters & Grades?

Why don't you contact the manufacturer?

It seem to me that if anyone would have that information it would be the company that designed, engineered and produces the items in question.

#1 Low Prestress say 10% of UTS is OK. If the anchored Static object tends to lift the massive concrete block-- most of ancor bolts' strength will be needed to keep the anchored object hugging to the concrete block. In downward( gravity )direction-prestress is not useful.

#2 As Steel structure itself is elastically "Weaker "than the Concrete Block, you will need Prestress of around 50% of UTS . Reason-- both+ and_ STATIC stresses must communicate between Anchored Object and the Steel Structure .

#3 Rotary will bring in full stress reversals .And no loosening will do . So Prestress of 75% UTS OF anchor bolts is in order. Cured Cement Grout needed here.

#4 Too intimate a link will cause all dynamic unbalance forces to shake the support Structure. If we want to minimise vibration to this Steel Structure , we should put elastomeric pads in between the Structure and the object. As soon as you put Elastomeric Pads-- your Prestress becomes meaningless.Hence 0% prestress here. But you cannot afford loosening up. So, elaborate Locknuts+Spring washers+ Tying up of boltheads is resorted to.

answer to your question is not an easy one, as equipment manufacturers have their own values for torques, basis the different applications as given above by you. they do come up with some torque values basis their experiences. you may find some guidance probably in machinery handbook, kemp's handbook, or from any similar well established handbooks, or from the anchor bolt manufacturers own application guidelines.

as a general guideline, static equipements would not require heavy anchor bolts, hence do not require higher torque values, while for the case of rotating equipments, it is critical and important to have right size of anchore bolts as well as the correct torque value, and that must be ensured by proper torque tightening tool etc.

in the case of reciprocating equipments, it is very important that a proper torque application is achived and properly locked by a suitable washer under the nut or bolt head or any other locking means, which are numerous.

the important aspect of locking is that it must be foolproof, otherwise it can loosen and lead to a major accident.
