How accurate do you need?

If you know the room temperature, place a large piece of ordinary masking tape (the beige-colored kind) on the wall. The masking tape should cover an area at least twice the size of the effective area of your scanner. Masking tape has an emissivity of about 1, so use the scanner to read the temperature of the masking tape; you can then set the scanner to read the same as the room temperature. The error would be within a degree C.

If you need more precision, send it to the manufacturer or to whatever metrology lab they recommend.

If all else fails, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
