Diesel Generator Selection

09/29/2010 2:49 AM

Please explain the main consideration for a selection of a generator for below requirment.

I want to run a 100kW, 415V , 92% efficiency motor with DOL starter on a disel generator set, kindly advise how to select the generator kVA for 100kw , in general what are the factors that need to be considered in selection a generation KVA( the generator loading is with only one motor of above said rating)

You really should look at a soft start unit rather than DOL otherwise your going to be spending a lot of money for a generator with enough punch to get the drive going.

Why not cut out all the electrical confetti and simply drive whatever device this is right off the engine? (There may be good reasons, but....)

Load of Motor is =100 KW

KVA Calculated of Motor= 100/0.85 = 117.65 KVA

Starting KVA Load = 6x 117.65 = 709 KVA

Combined Impedence & Voltage Drop is , 4% DG impedance and a voltage drop of 15%, then the DG rating for Load would be = (Impedence/Voltage Drop) x Calculated Load KVA * Design Margin

Design Margin is = 1.15

DG rating for Load =(4/15)*709*1.15 = 218 KVA

DG rating selected = calc KVA * Diversity factor =218*1.5=327 KVA
