Welding of Instrumentation Tubing (ASME)

09/29/2010 4:09 PM

Does ASME VIII-1 govern the welding of instrumentation tubing (for example, impulse tubing for PT)? If yes, what is the requirement? Does it need to be performed according to ASME XI rules? A reference to the relevant ASME VIII-1 paragraph would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Instrumentation tubing falls under the scope of ASME B31.3 as the scope of ASME VIII - 1 ends at first joint (e.g. flange face, weld joint for a butt weld nozzle).

Instrumentation tubing is normally small size and typically not welded. It is usually connected by compression fittings. Even it were welded, the welding requirements of ASME B31.3 will apply.

Thank you Samsung. Do you know if B31.1 covers the instrumentation tubing as well or B31.1 deals with other aspects of piping and not the instrumentation tubing?

Thanks again.

A lot of people use ASME B31.3 for instrument piping.

Why not get the welding done by a specialist with orbital welders? That way you can get a high integrity butt weld, usually preferred over socket welding.
