API 650

09/29/2010 4:29 PM

API 650 uses a live load of 20 psf (lb/ft2) in roof design.

A normal person weighs about 200 lbs. Assuming a standing area of 1 sqare feet, this results in a loading of 200 psf.

Is it safe to walk on the roof of API 650 tank ?

Your thoughts please.

Thanks

Going at this simply, if you assume a standing area of 1 ft2, the answer is no. Looking at this differently, to support 200 lb, you need 10 ft2. So if people stay around 3 ft apart the loading is in the ball park. The question is, does the design of the roof of the tank allow the weight to be distributed to around 3+ ft away without permanent deformation, damage, or failure? If your answer is "I don't know" , then my answer would be no.
