Piping Fabrication Tolerances

09/29/2010 4:34 PM

What is the commonly accepted tolerance in the fabrication of piping systems? For example, if two pieces of pipe are welded together, what are the commonly accepted deviations in alignment, final length, the original lengths of the pipe pieces, etc.? Does any of the ASME codes specify these?

Thank you

Please go to this web site and scroll down to the Quality Control section. There you will see "ES 3 Fabrication Tolerances" ($40.00) it will answer all your questions.

Pipe Fabrication Institute, Springdale, PA 15144 has one - FPI Standard ES 39: Fabricated Tolerances for Grooved Piping System and FPI Standard ES 2: Method of Dimensioning Piping Assemblies. You will find your answer in it. A.W. Siddiqui

API 5L is a standard for Line Pipe Specifications, i.e deals with the pipes at stage of procurement from mill such as specifying the materials, general specification, method of production, tests and examination, tolerances in thickness and diameter, acceptance criteria, ... etc. All of that for pipes going out of mill before going to the workshop for prefabrication or to site for fabrication and assembly.

At API 5L edition 2004, the titles derived as at your post are found: 9.12 RETESTS, 9.13 REPROCESSING & and Para. 9.14 is not found in the code.

Good morning Mr Abdel. My reference is to API 5L October 2007. In the mencioned points you can find all the requiered dimensions used in pipe fabrication. The Guest ask for:"what are the commonly accepted deviations in alignment, final length, the original lengths of the pipe pieces, etc.?". Then API 5L could be help.

REGARDS, ADOLPH
