What to do with '63 Yamaha?

09/30/2010 4:13 AM

I helped a friend of mine with some clean-up to his shop and he gave me this 63 Yamaha with the motor taken off and apart and put in a box.{He says it was siezed up.}plus he did not have a title for it. Pic., is what it would look like if i restored it. Here's what it really looks like...What would you do ith it?

You need to have a title to sell it, unless it's for parts. Submit a lost title form. If the engine is seized, it's probably only good for parts. It could probably still be restored, but it would be a challenge.......and expensive.

I don't know about the legal aspects of selling a vehicle without the title. Check the DMV website -- they should have some relevant information.

There are collectors that I'm sure would be interested in it as-is. Browse some of the motorcycle forums for ideas on what it's worth.

The title can be reconstructed by your DMV. They will do a check on the Vin # to see if its been stolen.

As far as what to do with it you must have had something in mind when you took it. Go with that. If the plan was to sell it put it up on Ebay see if any offers come up. May give you some idea if its a collectors piece.

Boat anchor? Nah, she is worth fixin' up.

Four or five thousand bucks, about a thousand hours, and she can look like photo #1. Truly a labor of love... do not simply get into a rebuild like this unless you REALLY want to have the finished bike for yourself.

Regarding the title: I believe this varies from state to state. I purchased an untitled car once, and was not too big a deal to fix that. Contact your local Motor Vehicle department for specifics where you are. If you are not going to drive it, you do not really need a title anyway.

Somewhere, there will be a collector who would love to restore this old bike.

A friend makes quite a good living by selling parts for old bikes, he has many customers who restore such machines.

Ah, that's nothin. You should see what I drag home that the wife just loves! Waaaay worse than that.

I've bought many auto's and bikes without titles. However the first thing I do if I don't know the person is do an NCIC search. DMV will have a form which is basically a run on the vin to make sure it's not stolen. Or, get a police officer friend to run the vin, same thing.

The rest is filling out the appropriate papers and waiting. Usually takes between 3 and 6 months to get a new title. There are slight variations, usually, from state to state. Of course do some checking.

If the bike has no or not much resale value then it's a love for the machine kind of thing. There is an Auction in Vegas every January on vintage bikes. On there site you can usually find bikes or cars that have sold to get an idea what it might bring at auction to see where you might be financially and if it's even worth it from that perspective. You might be surprised. http://www.midamericaauctions.com/

btw, I've had some great deals with "motors seized". As long as they don't try to start them, it can just be the rings rusting against the cylinder wall. Pull the plug and fill it with penetrating oil and wait a few days. Works most of the time. Iron ductile rings are horrible for that.

The '63 Yamaha Sport was one of the coolest bikes ever, don't underestimate it's value. Check collector sites.
