Actually armature core provides support to the winding, other than that most important factor is Reluctance of core material. Material which is used for making armature core have lower Reluctance, due to that current producing efficiency of Generator increases. Without using armature core we can produce EMF into winding of generator as per Faraday's law but quantity of current will differ as per using core material.
