For cutting metal.

It is not only the heat, but it creates a plasma (hot gases), these gases are also introduced to the process, which in the simplest terms blows the molten metal away.

Try Trunpf's or Mitsubishi web site on lasers, I'm sure they would have something more detailed.

For laser shows, the laser is stationary, and the beam is manipulated through mirrors, (scanners) operated by servo motors.
