Chevy Aveo - Brake Switch Issue

10/04/2010 9:18 AM

I have a 2008 Aveo. I have my check engine light on, code is P0571 - brake switch circuit. This is what happens: I have the car in park and try to shift to gear (while pushing the brakes), but the handle is stuck. It does not move. I had to access the shift lock release to make it go in gear. The problem is not continously showing up, it comes and goes. My brake lights work fine. I think it is a brake switch that is malfunctioning. Have someone had the same issue? Any suggestion of how to fix it or locate the bad component? Thanks!

Try these links that I found on Google;

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080229184759AAaKMbR

Many of the discussions reference replacement of the brake transaxle shift interlock (BTSI solenoid)

You may also consider contacting a dealer service department for information/advice.

Good Luck!

I had a similar problem with my vehicle. There was a dual contact switch that came in contact with the brake pedal when you press the brake. One of the contacts failed while the other continued to work. Try looking down behind the brake pedal. Check the contacts with a meter.

That sounds like the right test pattern to me. Check the color of the wires on the shift interlock solenoid. Compare to the colors on the brake switch(es). If the switches look the same, switch wire leads between them, and retest. If not a test light should check quality of the switches. Good luck.

I have had the same problem and everyone said there was a wiring problem but i have had my friend fixed it before by him pressing a spring or something and all of a sudden my break lights worked again and it shifted outta gear just like that... The only problem is i dont know where to find that little spring to fix it myself. Help would be much appreciated!!

Try taking your hand, and pulling up on the brake pedal. It may reset the switch.

Mine did the same thing. Had the brake switch swapped out at the dealership (ten bucks for the part, 40 for an hr service), and I was fine. Mine completely went out: no shifting out of park w/out the override and no brake lights. The biggest problem was getting the dealership to "just fix it" without having to bring it in for an eval. Finally they got it through their heads when I told them that without brake lights, I would only bring it in ONE time, or I'd go across the street to their rival.

I had the same problem. intermittentaly not able to shift after stepping on the brake and no brake lights. it finally went permanent. I removed the brake switch and pulled it apart, it was kind of dirty but the switch did work. I cleaned it up with some contact cleaner and now the switch works fine. I guess what I'm saying is the test light won't actually tell you if the thing works. You might need to take it apart and clean it. Then see if it works.
