Oil Filter

10/04/2010 9:26 PM

I am looking for the proper oil filter to use on a 1943 Hale WW-II OCD trailer pump. It is believed to have a Chrysler Type T-109-501 engine in it. The manuals I have do not specify the oil filter.

When I got it the oil filter on it was an AC P-21. The (presumably) equivalent replacement on it now is a Motorcraft FL142.

Does anyone have information on the oil filter that was originally specified? Or can direct me to a good cross-reference directory. So far cross-references have found zero results.

Thanks.

Is what you have not working well? I guess you'll have to get info from probably Chrysler. Otherwise do some measuring and try to find one based on the results you find in the "measurements or mechanical specs. references".

Is it already a cartridge, screw on type? You'll need diameter and specific thread, length of the threaded pipe, diameter of the seal area e.g. and do some searching - Maybe your pump is somewhere in a museum with a original filter on it to copy?

How can I tell if an oil filter is OK or is plugged and bypassing everything? I'm pretty sure it is a partial flow type. I have a question out to a friend who worked with the Chrysler archives--no reply yet.

It is not the screw-on type, nor the type that fits into a cannister. These pumps were made by the multi-thousands; all but a few have disappeared.

I'm not a guest, but the OP! I did my monthly computer cleaning, which makes me log in again--and I forgot!

NAPA 1071 is the best suggestion I have right now. You need to identify the engine. Copy the numbers off of the distributer, and the carburetor. From those #s, we should be able to identify the engine. Once we have that, the oil filter will be easy.

Is Hale the pump manufacturer? Hale may have more information about it. Collectors of old military equipment may also have information. Good luck.

The images didn't make it to this machine. I printed in order to check out in the garage, but it doesn't sound right.

I can get the phone # for the Napa filter help line for you, but they will ask some questions of the motor that you will need to know. I will send tomorrow.

NAPA has a toll free hotline for help with filter problems. 1-800-949-6698. They should be able to help you with any technical questions, or applications. Good luck.

Been so busy I haven't had a chance to try NAPA yet--maybe tomorrow.

I did check the oil filter now on it (WW-2 OCD trailer pump with Chrysler engine), and I stand corrected. Part of the clamp holding it on covered the number! The filter on it now is a Wix 51035. Other filters in my notes (equivalents?) are AC P-21, and Motorcraft FL 142. The manual does not say what filter should be used.

I am, therefore, looking for an equivalent. It is not a spin on, nor the type that goes into a metal can (cartridge?) There is no gasket, because the only connections are 1/8" pipe thread on top and bottom. The exterior is a metal can that does not open at all. It is about 4 1/4" diameter and 5 3/4" high.

Thanks.

The 51035 would cross over to a NAPA 1035. That # is no longer shown. Call the NAPA filter hotline I sent. they should be able to help. Or, you might be able to send E-mail to them.

The hotline gave me a WIX website--apparently WIX makes filters for NAPA. The hotline said that Wix 51035 and NAPA 1035 are the same, and both are obsolete. Checking the website added the info that they cannot be ordered.

I knew the NAPA-WIX info. Do theyhave any number to use as a replacement? Is that the correct filter for your application? If you have a Hale number, I can get you in touch with some good people there.

They did not suggest a replacement filter number, and I didn't ask directly. I would have expected them to mention one if one existed--could be a sale for them.

I do not have a Hale/Chrysler number--wish I did to confirm that I am looking for the correct filter. The manual I have mentions that a new filter should be used, but does not give the number.

I ought to try the forums on the AACA website. Have already put the question out to the SPAAMFAA Yahoo Group, but no reply yet.

I have not renewed my SPAAMFAA for a few years now. They are a good bunch of people there. Another avenue might be to reach out to collectors of old military equipment. Good luck.
