Direct Injection of Gaseous Fuels

10/05/2010 1:47 AM

Is there any system available for direct injection of gaseous fuel in combustion chamber?

What research is going on in this field and what are the main restraining factors?

I'd think it problematic to inject a gaseous fluid because.
a) It is compressible.
b) It may ignite due to the pressure.

Agreed that it's problematic, but not for your reason b). It will get hot when compressed but won't ignite in the injection system as no oxygen is present.

Maybe if you were trying to direct inject ethyne ........ (or acetylene as us old-stagers might still call it)

Cheers......Codey

Ah! I miss read 'fuel' as 'fluid', and fluid could have included oxygen, come to think of it 'fuel' could include oxygen (admittedly it would prob be a bad idea).
I demand a recount!
...anyhow, you just sore 'cos we nabbed the Ryder cup.

Maybe it's 'cos "Codey" sounds a little <cough> "Yeehaw"?.
Still it doesn't hurt to mention the Ryder Cup.

I am not sure what the question is here. I do know that there are a number of instances where natural gas (typically a mixture of butane and methane) in internal combustion engines, both for automotive use and in stationary electrical power plants. I do not know if the fuel is forceably inected, or sucked in by the vacuum created by the intake stroke...

I believe that there are systems that inject LPG into the manifold (as per EFI) but I LPG should pose few problems other than the design of the injectors.

Compressed Natural Gas & LPG are routinely injected into the combustion chambers of Diesel cycle engines with Diesel also injected as the initiator to start the combustion off. We have discussed this at great length in earlier posting.

Gasman

Direct lpg injection has been perfected in Australia. Here is a website for more info.

www.australianlpgwarehouse.com.au

You may also do a google search with the following keywords:

"direct+lpg+injection+combustion+chamber" and hit the 'search'

button. There will be websites galore!!!!!

Unfortunately, part of my comment was deleted when trying to edit. I did say that I couldn't foresee any great problems with DI.

I recall there was a dual fuel direct injection injector unit being made by a Dutch co..could use petrol or LPG not into the pre ignition chamber but direct into the cylinder I dont recall the name.. but there was also one in Japan.. Hope this helps..

I think the main purpose for an injection system is get something close to vapor of fuel or gas, if you already count with fuel in such state...Other big confussion here and repeated one along many threads is about the differences about liquified (propano.butano, low pressure tank) and natural gas (metano.etano, high pressure tanks) systems. In case of diesel engines, the diesel fuel is still used for ignition or up to close 50% :the rest is any gas provided (not "injected") into the air intake conduits.Prob.lquified gas could be injected but is good to see how many specifications are rated for a common diesel fuel before use vegetal oil or try lpg.
