Open Foam CFD

10/06/2010 10:05 AM

Is anybody working with Open Foam for Windows?

I downloaded the package but have no information on how to start the Open Foam Designer.

Could anybody give me indications? The different docs are -as far as I saw it -for the Unix version and no hint how to use for the Windows soft.

Thanks

I tried a search on "openfoam windows driver" that got 5E6 hits. Many looked unhelpful, but maybe some might work?

The documentation for OpenFOAM is atrocious. Here is a place to start:

www.cfd-online.com/Forums/openfoam-installation-windows/65175-how-install-openfoam-under-windows.html

There may be other threads on the forum that would more directly address your specific issues- This forum is a whole lot more informative than the documentation.

CAELinux is quite helpfull. It provides a bootable open-source linux environment with many CAE apps (including Foam) that will work on most systems. Documentation (to varying degrees) is included: www.caelinux.com

Guest's suggestion regarding CAELinux is a very good option- it is what I use Running from a LiveDVD will result in the program running slower, as would the alternative of running the program in a virtual machine. The optimum solution would be a dual-boot setup.

CAELinux also offers a number of alternative CFD solutions that may be a bit easier to use (Code_Saturne, Elmer, etc.), and some of the alternatives are a bit easier to use.

I wonder if this might be an example of a piece of software which justifies you dual booting your PC (Windows/Ubuntu say) and running the openfoam in the environment it was probably designed for.

I don't know if it's possible to run software like this from a reserved area of your hard drive using a "live cd" which would mean you wouldn't need to dual boot the PC.

Someone who knew what they were doing (not me) could almost certainly create a special live CD with a basic version of Linux and this software only.

Sorry I've started drivelling: just thinking aloud really. I don't know anything about this sort of thing.

OpenFOAM in CAELinux will be discussed in one of my future blog entries. I just started a new bolg on OpenSource- give us a visit, and let me know where you would like me to go with this...
