Hyundai Tucson 2.0GLS

10/09/2010 10:48 AM

I drive a 2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.0GLS. Recently the steering shakes when brakes are applied at slightly above 120km/h. I took the vehicle for wheel alignment but this did not resolve the problem. The vehicle has done +94000 on the odometer and I am the first owner. What could be the problem and how to resolve this? I have not taken the vehicle to the dealer yet as I suspect it is more a mechanical issue.

I believe it would be a wise move to have someone check the front brake and suspension systems. Its not a good idea to drive a vehicle with any type of brake problem.

Sounds like your brake rotors are warped. Have them replaced.

as lyn says your discs i also agree its likely to be a disc fault.

does it have ABS ? i ask because when ABS comes in when your braking it makes the brakes judder, but normaly only at low speeds unless of course its playing up

The problem is your brake rotors have gotten over heated and warped,

you will need to replace the rotors and also check the brake calapers for sticking and poss. the brake hoses for inturnal swelling cussing the calapers to hold pressure after releasing the brakes

Problem with your braking is probably due to the brake discs being warped, remove the front wheels, and rig up a magnetic dial gauge, measure the run out of the discs at their greatest dia. which should not be more than 0.030mm.

There are two possible reasons. 1)The wheel disks may be warped or unevenly worn, and/or the vehicle's front wheels are unbalanced.

Wheel mis-alignment does not usually cause steering wheel shake.

First, get the wheels balanced and try it out. If it persists, then you should have an urgent examination of the brake disks and pads because the vehicle has done 94,000+ miles and have repairs carried out.

Hello bash123 and other CR4 friends

The balancing perhaps might be the cause as wheel alignment failed to resolve this problem. The last service on the vehicle was done at 90000km. Disks and pads will be checked thereafter should the problem persist. What problems are mostly encountered with suspension and control arms/bushes etc? I never had a vehicle that I heard to service suspension before. The noise and vibration just comes out and disapear at lower speeds (from around 100kph)

Jeez,

Your OP says "when you apply the brakes", etc. What does it take to convince you?

Good bye.

Greetings Guest! The trail of components from the steer. wheel to the road wheels, assuming rack & pinion, are as follows:1. steering column and bushes;2.Universal joint;3. Power steering sub-assembly; 4. Pinion & rack; 5. Ball joints; 6. Steering arm; and finally 7. The caliper & brake disk assembly and wheel bearings. Any wear in the ball joints, rack & pinion etc. can cause steering wheel rattle in addition to the road wheels 'wandering' from side to side requiring frequent steering correction. If the road wheels are 'out of balance' ie if the balancing lead weights are not fitted in the proper location, especially after tyres have been changed, or the lead weights have been lost, a rythmic beat will occur which gets amplified when the resonant frequency of the steering, or the car as a whole were to be approached, as the car gains speed. When the car speeds up and 'crosses the resonant frequency' the sound will decrease and even disappear at higher speed. In all likelihood, the wheels are out of balance. I suggest that you get the wheels balanced immediately. Hope this will be of some help.

Wheel disks (front) was the cause. Vehicle taken out of workshop today. Seem the problem is solved. Thanks to all for scratching your heads. I really appreciate your help.

Check your rotors, they may be warped.

The previous posters are probably correct. Google "brake judder".
