LPG Pipe line - Ice Formation

10/13/2010 4:10 AM

we hv 2 bullets in our gas plant, through which gas goes to different kilns.

so one night we observed that there is ice formation on gas trains gas pipe line,

and flow got reduced only in one kiln.

Please tell me why it has happened ?

Moisture, combined with the right temperature and pressure can result in the formation of Methane Hydrates. You don't say what the outside temp was, or what pressure the system was operating at. You could also have an issue with self-refrigeration if there is a large enough pressure drop. The moisture could be coming from the combustion products finding their way backwards in the system, or could have been entrained in the gas supply.

it is like this : gas is coming in line at 1.4 bar and then comes our gas train in gas train pressure of gas is reduces to 150 mbar and from that gas goes to burners of kiln.

the outside temprature is 21 deg. C.

and ice formation is on outer surface of pipe nearby gas train

you have a self-refrigeration problem. pressure is dropping too fast (probably a small orifice causing the pressure drop.) you have a partial obstruction in the line causing a pressure drop.
