Radiator Throws Water Out.

10/13/2010 5:03 AM

I have a 1000cc suzuki car. The problem im getting is that it heats up on highways and water boils in to radiator and it throws out the water out in to the reserve bottle and finally the bottle over flows. Got the thermostat valve replaced recently, please help me sort out this problem.

Do you see steam in the exhaust when you cold start the engine, maybe indicating a blown head gasket? Another thing to check is your radiator cap.

It's possible you got a bad thermostat. This can happen. I always put my new ones in a pot of water and raise the temp to make sure they work properly.

Since this is happening due to overheating, it's also very possible that your cooling system is clogged with sludge. Flush entire system, backflush radiator and also remove hoses going to heater core and flush out in both directions until water runs clear.

I also agree with solcar, check radiator cap. If it's not applying the correct tension, it will allow hot water to run to your reservoir tank.

Is coolant being pumped through the engine/radiator?

Try starting the engine with the radiator cap off (with engine cold). Once the engine warms up you should see the coolant flowing.

If not, causes could be thermostat, water pump, radiator blockage, crimped radiator hose, or block blockage.

When you do this test, DO NOT leave the vehicle un-attended with the engine running and radiator cap off.

Is your radiator fan turning on once the engine is warmed up? This could be another cause for boil over.

I hope you do not have a blown head gasket, but you may. A mechanic with an exhaust gas analyzer can hold the probe over the radiator fill cap and "sniff" for exhaust gas. I have been out of it for (long) while, but there must be some tests available for those that do not have analyzer's out there.

If a car has a problem in the cooling system, you go through thermostats quickly. Unfortunately, as I recall, the problem is almost always a blown head gasket or worse - cracked head.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and I hope you got a bad thermostat out of the box which certainly is not impossible.

thanks karamarat and KJK, I tried this already.. i mean filled up the radiator and started the car cold with radiator cap off... once the car warmed up the radiator started pushing the water out.. (like a volcano erupts).. radiator has been serviced as well recently. some one told be its because of the head gas kit.. but again my car doesnt heat up all the time. pls advise.

Just prior to "once the car warmed up the radiator started pushing the water out" did you see any flow at all?

I have seen over flowing (of the radiator) after the engine warms up on normal (functioning) engines. If it erupts as you stated, that does not sound normal.

Have you tried a compression test or exhaust gas analyzer as previously posted?

The only other thing I can think of is blown head gasket also as previously posted.

Not trying to be a pest but now I am really curious as to what the problem is.

Sorry I could not be of more assistance to you.
