Wrong Metering CT Ratio

10/13/2010 4:20 AM

What will happen to the meter reading if the CT ratio's nameplate is lower than the actual calculated ratio?

Eg:I have an installation with the nameplate of the CT ratio as 300/5 whereas the actual CT ratio is 400/5.

According to my understanding, we are billing this account 25% less than it should have been billed????

Ssshh. Keep quiet about it! 25% free electricity can't be bad.

Oh blast! It's you billing them. You're responsible for the accuracy of your metering equipment. Incompetence springs to mind if you've installed the wrong CT's. You'll find it difficult to amend the bills if it's been going on for some time.

Yeah, 4 sure.

Talk about incompetence, I would also add lack of commitment.

It appears that you meant energy meter here. In this case, you must use a multiplying factor to find the energy consumption.

If the meter's dial has already a multiplying factor (M.F), then the

New multiplying factor = M.F x (400/300) = M.F x 1.333

If the meter's dial doesn't have a multiplying factor (considered M.F = 1), then the

New multiplying factor = 1 x 400/300 = 1.333

The actual consumption is 33.3% more than the recorded value.

So if your utility company wrote to you saying we've been undercharging you by 25% for X years would you just get your chequebook out and pay them?

It all boils down to the utility companies incompetence.
